About This Tour
The Marangu Route, affectionately known as the Coca-Cola Route, is Mount Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established trail. It is the only route on the mountain that offers comfortable mountain huts with beds and dining areas instead of camping, making it a popular choice among trekkers seeking a more traditional and comfortable climbing experience. This route follows the southeastern slopes of Kilimanjaro, passing through lush rainforests, beautiful moorlands, and alpine deserts before reaching the legendary summit of Uhuru Peak. The 5-day itinerary is ideal for hikers with limited time and good fitness levels, though the shorter acclimatization period makes the climb more challenging.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After registration at Marangu Gate, begin your trek through lush rainforest filled with giant trees, birds, and colobus monkeys. The trail climbs gradually to Mandara Hut, where you enjoy dinner and overnight stay in mountain huts.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone with spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak. The trail is longer and more open as you continue to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Trek across the alpine desert known as the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic as you ascend to Kibo Hut, your final base before the summit attempt. Rest early and prepare for the midnight climb.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, climbing slowly through Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Receive your official summit certificate and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb before transfer back to Moshi.
